About Us

Hockey has been a part of Knoxville for quite sometime. The first hockey team to play in Knoxville was the Knoxville Knights in the 1960's. The Cherokees followed the Knights in the 1980's, changed to the Speed in the 1990's, and then became the Knoxville Ice Bears. The Ice Bears were part of the Atlantic Coast Conference for their inaugural season 2002. In 2003 we joined the South Eastern Hockey League. In 2004 we were one of the founding 8 teams of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL). We have remained a member of the Southern Professional Hockey League since 2004. The Knoxville Ice Bears finished have won three out of the past four championships, including two back-to-back titles in 2007-08 and 2008-09. It was the first time that any SPHL team won back-to-back championships.

The Knoxville Ice Bears are taking steps to educate more people about hockey, and expose the community of Knoxville to this exciting, fast-paced sport.
